WakeCup and smell the coffee!

About 1% of coffee sold in coffee stores actually goes into a reusable cup, 2.5 billion disposable cups are thrown away every year in the UK.

Coffee cups are extremely difficult to recycle-only 1 in 400 is currently recycled -and are frequently found on our beach cleans. Like all discarded plastics, they will eventually break down into microplastics causing even more harm to the marine environment. Having your coffee in a reusable WAKEcup is great for the environment and many coffee shops will give you money off for coming in with your own WAKEcup too!

While plastic pollution has increased by nearly a fifth over the last decade, it’s not all doom and gloom… The plastic bag charge has really helped by cutting the number of bags found on UK beaches by up to 40%, and by ditching the disposable coffee cup, we can help the oceans even more

Most people in this day and age will go to extra lengths to seek out recycling bins for their cups and yet it could all be in vain! It is a common misconception that single-use coffee cups are recyclable. This is due to the complex nature in which the cups are manufactured to keep the heat in, combining paper and plastic components. In fact, there are only three facilities in the whole of the UK which are capable of fully splitting the paper and plastic that make up these cups, resulting in a rough estimate of only 0.25% cups recycled.

While we are working hard to become more sustainable, we hope the trend is catching on. Just by reading and talking about this simple post you are helping to communicate this mammoth task, tackling the issue of single use plastic one step at a time. Watch this space, as we’re not done talking about this yet!
